Is it true?(kinda breastfeeding question)?

Several people have told me that if I plan on breast feeding that I need to rub a wash cloth really hard on my nipples in the shower while pregnant to toughen them up. Others say no its an old wives tale and it doesnt make a difference. Is it true?(kinda breastfeeding question)?
I didn't and wouldn't.... the wash cloth isn't going to do anything close to what the baby does. Don't waste your time or cause your self the unneeded pain. Baby will toughen those boobs up in no time.Is it true?(kinda breastfeeding question)?
I never heard of that and I breastfed three kids. It sounds rediculous to me. A proper latch and time will give your nipples time to adjust. You don't need to do anything ahead of time other that invest in a high quality breast pump and nursing items like pads and supportive bras.
not true. all you have to do is have that baby.
That is crazy!!!!

I did not do that and I am breastfeeding!
Old wive's tale, invented to make breastfeeding restrictive and inconvenient. I do believe that some of us have trouble with nipple sensitivity in those early, even though research does not support this. At any rate, there is no need to prepare your poor nipples.
Holy cow, that's definitely an old wive's tale. You don't need to do any such thing!

I breastfed my son (my first) for 12 months and am currently breastfeeding my 9 month old twins and didn't do any such thing. My nipples were sore for about a week with my son, but after that it was not painful at al. With my twins, I didn't really even get that sore.
I was told this too...its ridiculous really. I didn't do anything to ';prepare'; my nipples to breast feed. They will be a little sore but nothing that ya can't handle. Good luck!
I've never heard that. You don't have to do it. It's not painful if you do it the right way. Get a lactation specialist to help you. Some organizations have them for free.
ive neevr heard of that

your nipples will be sore at first

but they will go back to normal

dont worry about it
I believe this would only irritate the nipple. I wouldn't do it.
No way! ouch!! I didn't do that and my nipples just toughened up on there own from my baby eating...But the nurse at the hospital where I delivered told me that back in the old days that women would rub their nipples with sandpaper to toughen them up !! what was wrong with them ?!
Oh my, Don't do that to yourself you poor girl! I have never heard of this before. But I know it can't be true. You nipples will ready them self, just like your body did for pregnancy and your breast will for milk. It's an old wives tale.
Well first of all you need to be careful messing with your nipples towards the end of your pregnancy because to much nipple stimulation can induce pre term labor so I would definitely not recommend this. Your body knows what it is doing and women have be breastfeeding since the dawn of time. You do not need to worry about it. It will all come naturally. There is no need to put yourself in any more discomfort then pregnancy itself.
There is nothing you need to do. Just give birth and offer your baby your breast. Your baby will condition your nipples over the first couple weeks.
Yikes. Trust me, that will only make them raw and very painful. There's absolutely NO reason to do that. When in doubt though, always consult your OB. They will gladly tell you about all the things you should and shouldn't do when it comes to breastfeeding. At the hospital, there will also be lactation consultants to answer any and all questions that you have.
Most lactation specialists and books these days will say that you can do it, but it will not make any difference. I honesty, wouldnt rub a clothe really hard on it. What i'm doing is, just pinching them and pulling at them for about 1 minute each in the shower.

In a sense, yes, it is an old wives tail. But if there is no harm done, then why not.
Do not do that. You will jsut make yourself miserable. If baby is nursing properly you may get tender but most times it doesnt last very long -- a few days at most.

Find a LeLecha League near you and attend meetings... or find a near-by mom from the group you can get assistance from if you have problems!
That was standard proceedure back in the 70s, and la Leche was the one suggesting it. They didn't say to wash really hard, just to go over them with a wash cloth during your shower. It's still in their pamphlets from 1979 and my mom did it. Ideas change.
You don't have to do that. Just give your baby your nipple and you'll be fine.
no way ! Let nature handle it. Dont torture yourself LOL. Just buy some lanisol for the first weeks of breastfeeding to ease any discomfort...
It's a wives tale. After you have the baby, be sure to use lanisoh lanolin breast care before and after everytime you breastfeed, until your nipples toughen up.
Yeah, they fed me that old wives tale too.. I never did it... And I've never had a problem!
