Yes and No... for a question for a twelve year old, then the answer is most probably yes... but there is radiation from external sources, other than sunlight. There are also random decomposition of particles which effect the energy of a substance, as well as many other things. but without sunlight, nothing would be able to survive for long, including animals, plants, bacteria etc. because somewhere, everything consumes something else that converts sun into energy...
